Youngjoo Cho

Biography

Youngjoo Cho (b. 1978, Seoul) is a conceptual artist based between Seoul, Berlin, and Paris. Working across performance, installation, photography, video, sound, and dance, Cho investigates the cultural and social dynamics that shape identity, gender, and power. Her work often examines the position of Korean women within contemporary society, revealing the irrationalities and contradictions of social structures through both personal and collective narratives.

Cho frequently realises institutional exhibitions and commissions, producing works that engage diverse publics through participatory and performative strategies. Her projects often involve collaborations with children, teenagers, and middle-aged women, addressing questions of female identity, gendered perception, and the relations between Western men and Korean women.

She studied at the École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy (DNSEP with honours, 2007; DNAP, 2005), the Université Paris 8 (MFA studies, 2003–2005), the École municipale supérieure d’arts de Rueil-Malmaison (2004), and Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul (BA, 2001). Cho is currently completing her residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, which concludes at the end of 2025.

Her works are held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan and the Cheongju Museum of Art, Korea.
