Youngjoo Cho featured in de Volkskrant as one of the outstanding talents of the Jan van Eyck Academie

We are delighted to share that Youngjoo Cho, current resident at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, has been featured in de Volkskrant as one of four outstanding artists from this year’s cohort.

Cho’s recent experimental film, Flesh Behind the Curtain, explores the layered meanings projected onto the female body from sexuality to politics through a sequence of intimate and subversive vignettes. Across seven short scenes, Cho reconsiders the breast and the womb as sites of nurture, strength, and transformation: from a mother nursing her child to a drag queen discovering confidence through performance. The film concludes with an older woman transforming gestures of self-examination and care into a tender, self-affirming dance: a quiet act of reclamation from external gaze and expectation.

Selected from over 1,800 international applicants, Cho’s residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie reflects her growing recognition as an artist whose work bridges personal and political narratives through film, performance, and the body.

We look forward to following Cho’s evolving practice and are in conversation toward a possible collaboration in the coming years.
